Kuleto's - San Francisco

After 5 solid days of eating in Napa and San Francisco,  I felt full just thinking of dinner.  However, after stepping into Kuleto's and eyeing other people's meals,  I felt ready to eat again.

I started with calamari which was lightly battered and crispy.  It came with some slightly spicy marinara sauce and a splash of lemon.  Done just so.  D's eggplant appetizer looked good too, he said it was well done.   I usually stay away from anything with cheese in it and this dish had lots.
Calamari - Quickly fried, spicy marinara, lemon

Eggplant Involtini - Herbed ricotta, fresh mozzarella, spicy marinara
Tagliatelle - Dungeness crab, lemon, garlic, scallions, butter
We had agreed to eat light today and ordered pasta for the mains.   The pasta was well done but I felt that the butter and lemon overpowered the crab...not quite to my taste...besides I had eaten the whole big plate of calamari and was rather full.
Pappardelle - Duck “Bolognese”
D's dish of duck bolognese was very flavourful and tasty.
Limoncello Meringue Tart - Blueberry compote, lemon cream sorbetto
D convinced me (it really wasn't very hard) to have some dessert and we shared the limoncello meringue tart.  The blueberry compote and lemon cream sorbetto was excellent and I had some mint tea.  Isn't the presentation of the tea cute?

If you find yourself in Union Square and looking for a place to eat - drop by Kuleto's for simple, hearty and unpretentious Italian.  You can watch the chefs at work in the open concept kitchen as well as enjoy the old world charm of the place.
